Platfform New Writing: Rehearsed Reading

Platfform New Writing: Rehearsed Reading

Theatr Iolo and Sherman Theatre are giving a group of playwrights the opportunity to develop new work for children and young people during a weekend of workshops and readings.

The two Cardiff based companies have joined forces to give four writers the chance to develop and showcase new work for young people across a whole weekend this September. The event, which takes place over 21 and 22 September at the Sherman in Cardiff, will also give the writers access to a director from the JMK/Sherman Directors Group and local professional actors to help develop their work.

The writers taking part in the event were selected from a call-out by Theatr Iolo in 2018 where Welsh and Wales based writers were invited to submit stories for the stage written for young people between the ages of 3 and 16. The writers selected from the call-out are Kyle Lima, Catherine Dyson, Tracy Harris and Catrin Fflur Huws.

The four new scripts include a Welsh language play exploring what it means to find your true colours, a mystery about the disappearance of a young girl, an adventurous new look at a mythical Welsh legend and a documentary drama exploring the aspirations of young people in Wales.

“Platfform New Writing is at the heart of Theatr Iolo’s philosophy. We want to develop new plays for children, young people and their families, with emerging and established writers who may not have written for this audience before. I am thrilled that we’re able to give writers the space to explore their voice to create theatrically relevant work for young people that we hope to support, develop and produce in the near future.”
Lee Lyford, Artistic Director, Theatr Iolo

“I am thrilled that the Sherman is collaborating on Platfform New Writing with Theatr Iolo. Both new writing and providing engaging theatre experiences for children and young people are at the very heart of what we do at the Sherman and so it is vital that projects like this exist to support writers to develop new ideas into quality theatre for young people. It is also exciting to see these incredible writers paired with four of our brilliant JMK/Sherman Directors Group participants to bring their work to the stage, and I can’t wait to see the results.”

Joe Murphy, Artistic Director, Sherman Theatre

During the first day, the writers and directors will work together in the morning to develop their ideas before being joined by a group of professional actors to start exploring the plays together in the afternoon and into Sunday morning. The weekend will culminate with the Platfform New Writing Rehearsed Reading event, where short extracts of the pieces will be performed to an audience.

The Platfform New Writing Rehearsed Reading event will take place at The Sherman on Sunday 22 September at 5.30pm. This event is Pay What You Decide (where audiences decide how much to pay for their ticket). Tickets need to be booked in advance of the performance by calling the Box Office on 029 2064 6900 or by visiting www.shermantheatre.co.uk

Theatr Iolo will be doing a further call out for new writing in spring 2020. If you are interested in finding out more, please email hello@theatriolo.com
